Unlock Your Potential as a DMV Revenue Accountant I

As a DMV Revenue Accountant I, you will serve as a key financial analyst, transforming complex DRIVES data into actionable insights for the State Controller, the Legislature, and the State Treasurer . You will be the frontline defender of the Department's fiscal integrity, meticulously reviewing accounting reports to detect and resolve control issues before they escalate .

What You'll Do:

  • Review DRIVES general ledger documents to ensure DMV payment activity is accurately posted to the Department of Revenue and other state agencies.

  • Create and enter vital journal entries in the DRIVES system to handle necessary adjustments.

  • Calculate and enter the distributions for Cities, Counties, and Special Districts to guarantee all revenue is recorded correctly .

  • Analyze and enter specific financial information into the CORE system for high-level stakeholders, including the State Controller, Legislature, and State Treasurer .

  • Identify and resolve variances in monthly DRIVES/CORE reconciliations to meet strict department deadlines.

  • Review financial reports and contact county offices to resolve unreconciled transactions and ensure revenue is reflected appropriately .

  • Audit accounting reports and bank statements to detect potential issues within accounting controls .

  • Meet with DOR management and other state personnel to define the accounting requirements and processes needed for successful revenue collection.

  • Use GAAP, GASB, and State Fiscal Rules to decide how transactions should be recorded and reported on Statewide Financial Statements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience Only:

Four (4) years of relevant experience in accounting.

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education (coursework requires 27 semester hours completed in accounting or auditing) and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years

Current, valid licensure as a CPA by the Colorado Board of Accountancy will substitute for four (4) years of education

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Experience working with complex financial systems, specifically DRIVES (Driver License, Record, Identification and Vehicle Enterprise Solution) and CORE (Colorado Operations Resource Engine).

  • Deep understanding of GAAP Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), GASP (Governmental Accounting Standards Board), and State Fiscal Rules.

  • Proven ability to perform complex monthly reconciliations, identifying variances between system balances and external documentation like bank statements .

  • Hands-on experience with Fiscal Year-End closing activities, including the preparation of journal entries for refunds payable, accounts receivable, and year-end accruals.

  • Ability to research discrepancies in high-volume data and determine if issues are caused by system limitations or human activity .

  • Skill in reviewing accounting reports to detect problems concerning internal controls and ensuring all transactions are processed according to established policies.

  • Experience meeting with management and personnel from various state agencies to define accounting requirements and legislation implementation .

  • Ability to work tactfully with a range of individuals, including county offices and third-party agencies, to resolve unreconciled transactions.

Conditions of Employment with the CDOR:

Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.

As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations.

Pursuant to the Universal Driving Standards Policy ( , any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.

To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
