Job Description

Purpose:
The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, training, and supervision of the volunteer component of hospice services to terminally ill patients and serves as a member of the interdisciplinary group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Recruits and screens applicants for volunteer services in the area of patient support/respite service, bereavement support, or administrative support.

* 2. Oversees and provides comprehensive volunteer training. 

* 3. Assesses patient/family/caregiver for volunteer needs and makes appropriate assignment of volunteers.

* 4. Makes initial joint visit with volunteer to introduce volunteer services to the patient/family/caregiver, completes the Volunteer Activity Plan.

* 5. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in the implementing, review, and revision of the patient’s/family’s plan of care and assists in the determination of volunteer needs.

* 6. Supervises all aspects of the volunteer program; scheduling, monitoring appropriateness of patient care assignments, and completing probationary and annual performance evaluations.

7. Monitors and updates volunteer personnel files as needed.

8. Oversees completion of monthly reports required for: review of program status, verification of volunteer hours, and percentage of volunteer utilization vs. direct labor hours.

9. Coordinates or provides continuing education for volunteers.

10. Conducts volunteer support meetings as needed.

11. Supports quality improvement efforts through participation in quality improvement activities as requested.

12. Attends in-services and continuing education activities.

13. Interfaces with the patient/family/caregiver, the hospice team, other health care providers in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.

14. Acts as a community liaison, providing community education on hospice philosophy and volunteer services.

15. Maintains sound privacy and security practices and prevents privacy or security breaches. If breach occurs, takes corrective action.

Qualifications:

1. Baccalaureate in Counseling, Social Work, Education, or related field. 

2. Two years experience in the area of volunteerism, death and dying, bereavement or related area. Prefer previous exposure to hospice services. 

3. Excellent time management skills, and communication skills.
