Description
About the Role The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician performs clinical laboratory testing, quality assurance, and routine instrument maintenance. The MLS/MLT works collaboratively with intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff to ensure accurate, timely results, with strong focus on patient care and safety.
How You'll Make an Impact As a MLS/MLT, you make an impact by ensuring patients receive accurate and timely lab results that directly guide diagnosis and treatment decisions. You maintain the reliability of testing through quality assurance and proper instrument upkeep, helping prevent errors that could affect patient care. You also support effective communication across departments, contributing to a coordinated healthcare team where patient safety and care remain top priority.
Customer Service - Answer incoming phone calls and returns messages as needed in a timely and professional manner.
- Assists with clinic phlebotomy and performs point-of-care or other clinic laboratory testing as needed.
- Maintains the fax log and ensures all documents are appropriately faxed, either electronically or manually, as needed.
Billing Procedures & Accounts Receivables
- Performs daily charge reconciliation to ensure accuracy and completeness of billing records.
- Adds, edits, or deletes charges as necessary to maintain accurate documentation and billing integrity.
Inventory & Order Placements
- Manages laboratory inventory and supplies in coordination with the Lab Manager.
- Requests and orders supplies for Materials Management and Quest as needed.
- Receives, logs, and unpacks incoming supplies in an organized and timely manner.
Policies & Procedures
- Performs venous, capillary (fingerstick), and heel stick phlebotomy on patients using proper technique.
- Performs laboratory testing offered at Scott City Clinic and Scott County Hospital in accordance with established procedures.
- Orders laboratory testing through the electronic system and ensures accurate labeling of specimen containers.
- Centrifuges, processes, and prepares specimens for analysis, including send-out testing.
- Maintains and organizes patient outside provider laboratory order files.
- Ensures adherence to quality control standards by performing, documenting, and reviewing quality control data.
- Identifies and resolves common technical issues and instrument or testing problems as appropriate.
- Operates the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and performs basic troubleshooting as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge of reference ranges and ensures proper handling and rejection of unacceptable specimens.
- Follows all Scott County Hospital Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety standards in daily practice.
- Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards in daily practice.
- Participates in on-call responsibilities and performs STAT and emergency testing as required.
- Performs blood bank duties, including typing, crossmatching, and related procedures, and maintains readiness for emergency blood availability and coordination of blood transport to Scott County Hospital.
Organizational Support
- Assists laboratory and hospital personnel as needed to support efficient workflow and patient care.
Requirements
Qualifications - ASCP MLS or MLT or equivalent
- One to two years' experience in laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
- Medical Laboratory Scientists MLS: Bachelor's Degree and the successful completion of an accredited Medical Technology program or the equivalent training, education, and experience.
- Medical Laboratory Technician MLT: Associate degree and the successful completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program or the equivalent training, education, and experience.
- ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized medical technology certification or categorical certification. (Note: Those with categorical certification only will be restricted to the discipline in which they hold the categorical certification.

- Operates laboratory equipment with proficiency, including routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
- Coordinates with service personnel as needed to address equipment malfunctions and ensure timely resolution.
Position Details
Schedule : Full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week. Working irregular hours. Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Physical Requirements: Occasional sitting, frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting/carrying 10-25 pounds; frequent reaching/grasping, twisting, pulling/pushing, frequent exposure to sharp instruments, and frequent exposure to equipment.
Equipment : Standard hospital laboratory equipment.
